Clinical placements are where your learning comes to life. They help you develop critical nursing or midwifery skills, gain real-world experience, and build valuable professional connections. Whether you're about to start your first placement or you're midway through your studies, here’s how to prepare, thrive, and grow during this vital learning experience.

✅ Preparation is Key
Complete all paperwork early: Police check, Working With Children Check, NDIS check, immunisations, placement documentation.
Pack your essentials: Stethoscope, fob watch, notebook, pens (ideally multi-colour), student ID badge.
Save important contacts: Store your clinical facilitator and placement coordinator’s numbers on your phone.
Know your logistics: Plan your route, confirm parking options or public transport, and allow extra time for unexpected delays.
Meal prep wisely: Hospital cafés can be closed or have limited hours. Pack enough food and snacks.

📚 Brush Up and Be Ready
Review coursework and clinical objectives: Know your learning goals and required competencies.
Research the facility and ward: Understand the common conditions and care practices of your placement site.
Know your scope: Stick to the expectations of your level of study. If you’re an EN or RUSON/RUSOM, clarify your dual roles.
Have your questions ready: Jot down anything unclear in a notebook to follow up with your facilitator.
👔 Professionalism Matters
Dress code: Follow university and facility guidelines. Wear enclosed, non-slip, clean shoes.
Infection control: Tie back long hair, short natural nails, bare below the elbows, and follow PPE requirements.
Respect policies: Be aware of rules around visible tattoos and piercings.
Protect confidentiality: Review the NMBA social media guidelines and never discuss patients in public areas.
💬 Communication is a Skill
Be professional and respectful: Speak clearly and courteously with staff, patients, and families.
Maintain confidentiality: Dispose of notes in the correct bins and avoid discussions in public spaces.
Ask questions when unsure: There are no silly questions — placement is a learning experience.

🧠 Looking After Your Wellbeing
Stay connected: Talk to friends, family, and classmates. You’re not alone.
Use support services: Call NMHPV (03 9415 7551) or Nurse & Midwife Support (1800 667 877) for confidential support.
Have a stress plan: Use wellness resources and reflect regularly.
Support each other: If you see a fellow student struggling, offer kindness and help.
🔍 Navigating Conflict on Placement
Conflict can be an opportunity for growth. If tensions arise:
Listen actively and remain respectful
Seek support or advice early
Journal your experience
Be assertive but not aggressive
Use perspective and empathy
If you feel bullied or unsafe, reach out to support lines or your education provider.
💸 Managing Financial Stress
Placements can limit your ability to work. Prepare early:
Budget for low/no-income periods
Save in advance and track spending
Explore scholarships and financial aid
Discuss leave with your employer early
🎯 Setting Learning Goals
Before starting placement:
Identify your gaps in knowledge
Define 2–3 SMART goals (e.g., improve BP measurement technique)
Share goals with your educator and track progress
📝 Making the Most of Feedback
Feedback helps you grow. Here’s how to handle it well:
View it as an opportunity, not a criticism
Listen actively and clarify if needed
Ask for specific strategies to improve
Reflect and action the feedback
💡 Final Tips from Students
From real placement experiences:
Carry a notebook: Record abbreviations, procedures, and questions.
Understand your environment: Learn facility layout before Day 1.
Comfort is critical: Invest in good shoes.
Speak with allied health staff: It broadens your understanding of team-based care.
Treat everyone with dignity: Care for patients like you would your loved ones.
