At DOKE Talent, we’ve seen it all — and trust us, hiring managers have too. Whether you’re applying for your very first GNMP role or making a move to a new hospital, your application journey is being watched closely — from the moment you hit “submit” to the second you log into that group interview Zoom call.
Let’s break down the top common mistakes nurses make during the application and interview process — and how to avoid them.
📌 1. Poor Grammar, Bad Formatting & Sloppy Presentation
Red flag: Typos in your resume. Awkward cover letter formatting. Addressing the letter to the wrong person. Submitting it in the wrong file format.
Fix it:
Triple-check grammar and spelling (hello, Grammarly).
Read the job ad carefully — follow formatting and attachment instructions to the letter.
Personalise your greeting. If a name is listed, look up their title and address. No name? Address it to “Recruitment Manager” with the correct organisation.
Pro tip: First impressions start before you even speak.
🙅♂️ 2. Lying, Exaggerating or Applying Blindly
Red flag: Claiming experience you don’t have. Applying to roles wildly outside your scope (or clearly beneath it). Copy-pasting a generic resume to every job.
Fix it:
Be honest and strategic. It’s okay to aim high — just don’t fake it.
Adjust your resume for every role. Align your skills with what the hospital needs.
Add a tailored cover letter that shows why this particular service fits you.
✉️ 3. Failing to Tailor Your Application
Red flag: Using the same resume and cover letter for every job.
Fix it:
Customise your resume title and summary to include keywords from the job ad.
Remove unrelated jobs and keep it relevant to the last 3–5 years.
Keep it sharp — ideally under 3 pages unless you’re in research or leadership.
🎤 4. Giving Boring Answers & Showing Up Unprepared
Red flag: Vague responses. No real examples. Struggling to answer “Why this hospital?”
Fix it:
Use the STAR technique: Situation, Task, Action, Result.
Practice real clinical examples that match the role’s requirements.
Research the hospital and mention their specialties, values, and services.
Bonus: Be ready to explain employment gaps — don’t let the recruiter fill in the blanks.
⏰ 5. Late Submissions or Interview No-Shows
Red flag: Submitting an application at 11:59pm or missing your interview.
Fix it:
Apply early. Don’t leave it to the deadline.
Confirm your interview, show up early, and follow all instructions given.
Remember: Punctuality, professionalism, and responsiveness say more about you than your GPA ever will.
